Western Cider Presents: Sienna Haralson Second Friday Art Show
My work looks at the West and asks, what if it was magical? More so than it already is, of course. I aim to capture the hauntingly beautiful shifting of light and natural phenomena while reinforcing the fantastical narrative with witches, unicorns, cryptids, and magic.
Each piece begins as a flash of inspiration rooted in observing nature during my travels and everyday activities. These vague visions are captured in a tiny sketch where the feeling is made clear with the addition of light and color. Though the ideation and planning happens digitally, oil is my preferred medium as the inherent glow it contains fits my work perfectly. The stylization of my figures is a culmination of my interest in visual storytelling through comics and animated films. My paintings are set in the Victorian era Wild West, as I have much admiration for the attire and architecture from that time, and my cowgirls almost always have a mustang companion, my favorite breed.
My nomadic childhood, school studies, personal interests, and gut feeling directly inform every decision and deepen my connection to the mysteries of our world. The everyday is magical once you learn to observe it.
